Many years ago, the UK went crazy for the Zhu Zhu Pets, they were toy hamsters all with a reasonable retail price from shops. But they were the biggest hit of the year and everyone wanted to get their hands on some, and it caused a huge surge in prices on reselling sites. To be honest it was the last thing I expected to turn up all these years later, but we have been testing out the new sets, and there is some great changes that have really improved…

We were sent the Hamster House Playset with slide, the Adventure Ball and an extra hamster too.

First up was assembling the Hamster House Playset, it looked daunting with lots of pieces, but it’s all straight forward with the included instruction, and within a few minutes we had a fully functional slide, ramp and home for the hamsters to live inside. I love the new design of the hamsters, they are softer and have a tuft of hair on their heads and they definitely have better features than the old version and these have loads more sounds and function than just a moving hamster, with a button on their neck and their back these even make a noise and turn when they hit an obstacle, clever!

You get one ‘Winkie’, a purple coloured hamster included in the set, but extra ones are available for RRP £12.99 each to really increase the play factor.

The Hamster Ball comes in two pieces, and is pretty easy to put together for an adult. Inside you get an additional piece that you place the Zhu Zhu hamster on, this means that the hamster won’t roll over inside the ball (we tried it without and it just kept flipping).

What I love is that there is an easy opening flap on the ball, so you don’t have to take the whole ball apart to get the hamster out, great design idea. The RRP is just £9.99, so it’s a great price for a little added extra to have even more fun with the hamsters.

My kids have LOVED  playing with the new Zhu Zhu pets, and are already planning which colour hamster they need next to add to the set. You can buy these now at Smyths and Toys R Us.

We were sent the products mentioned for the purpose of this review, all thoughts are our own.
