The arrival of summer holidays means that you will have more time to spend with the kids. Why not take advantage of the free time by planning a trip to London with the family? You’ll find tons of fun activities to keep the children entertained in the big city this summer. Here’s the best of what’s on in London for kids:

Family-Friendly Festivals

One way to enjoy the lovely weather is to take the kids to a summer festival in London. LolliBop takes place this weekend (Aug 16-18) at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and this year’s line-up features an assortment of arts, crafts, interactive mini workshops, and live entertainment. Also this weekend, the King’s Cross Festival is on at Coram’s Fields, and promises to include a number of fun-filled activities, including face painting, international music, and a bouncy castle. If you’re planning a trip to London later this summer, make sure to check out Festival of Neighbourhood: Beanotown at the Southbank Centre, which features a special Beanotown museum stocked with memorabilia, Table Dennis, and drawing workshops.

Interactive Museums

London museums are evidence that learning can be fun for kids. If you’re not sure what to do on a rainy weekday, take the kids into the city to explore one of London’s state-of-the-art museums. The Horniman Museum features Hands On Base technology that allows children to have a first-hand experience with anthropological objects, while the Science Museum includes a Launchpad area that will keep kids amused for hours. The Geffyre Museum will give your kids a taste of life in the 18th century, while the V&A Museum of Childhood includes activity stations such as Legos, board games, and rocking horses for kids. You might also consider planning a trip to the Natural History Museum. In addition to the cool fossils, kids will love the special Sensational Butterflies exhibit, which is open now through September 15 on the East Lawn.

Children’s Theatre

For a special treat, let your kids watch their favourite characters come to life on the stage this summer. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is currently on at the Apollo Shaftesbury, while The Lion King is on at the Lyceum Theatre and Matilda The Musical is on at the Cambridge Theatre. Want something more thrilling? Check out Dinosaur Zoo, which plays at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre now through September 8. For a combination of kid-friendly live performances, theatre workshops, and sneak peeks behind-the-scenes, head to Kids Week 2013, happening now through August 31 at various venues in the West End.
