Organized? How can I be organized with a partner who has all the tidiness of teenager, a baby and two young children to look after? Well it really isn’t that difficult, really! I once read that it takes three weeks to make or break a habit, so trying a few of these organisational tips for just three weeks, might make your household run a little smoother for many years to come.

Mealtimes can be a big headache if not planned in advance. The cost of food seems to be getting higher and higher, so buying in bulk and preparing meals in advance not only makes for   a more organized home, it can also save money too. Investing in a large freezer for a large family means that batches of your favourite dinners can be made and then de-frosted and re-heated when needed. Dishes like Stews for winter, chilli, savoury mince, pies and curries, are just a few filling meals that can be cooked in large quantities. For a few hours spent once a week in the kitchen, you could have meals for the rest of week that just need a few greens added to them and a little time heating up.

Housework is often a bone of contention in the family home. Some mums find it easier to just do it themselves, but even very young children can do little jobs to help, if you can delegate a few tasks a week to the kids, that’s an extra hour that you can spend doing something nice, like having a relaxing bath! Making sure the children have plenty of accessible storage space in their bedroom means they can put their own toys and clothes away. Also tasks like bed making can be taught to young children, even if you do have to put up with them having a bounce around on their mattress!

Laundry is a never-ending mountain of nuisance that many struggle to ever reach the top of! One way of conquering this uphill struggle is to relax, forget completely about having a specific ‘wash day’ and include a load or two of washing in your day-to-day routine. For children, try to avoid buying white items of clothing. They soon lose their whiteness, and often need much more than an economical low temperature ‘quick wash’ cycle. Try washing one load first thing in the morning and one at lunchtime, this should free up that whole day of the week that is dedicated to laundry and not much else. Hanging clothes up to dry means that many garments will not need any ironing saving both time and electricity!

There are so many easy ways to get your home running that little bit more efficiently, life shouldn’t be a daily grind for any parent, the more time spent organizing routines, will eventually make way for more time spent having fun!
