Sundays are a day of rest for most people, but for me it’s the day when me and hubby sit down to work out our budget for the week ahead. Now I would love to say that this something that is strict and leaves no room for manoeuvring, but reality is we probably spend a little more than we should but I figure that we all need treats in life, right?
With tonight being one near the end of the month, we have the whole lot of bills that will need to be paid before I am allowed any pocket money for clothes. We have two cars in the house so Car Insurance is a big killer for us, I am 27 and although my insurance is no longer the £2,000 it was just a few years ago, it’s still a lot more than hubbys token gesture payment in comparison. Council tax is also high for us, and considering we live in a modest house in a town littered with crime, the band E is hardly justified in my opinion. Especially considering the fortnightly bin collections and lack of policing even when it is needed.
As for water bills, well that is actually something that I pleased to say I don’t mind. We are on a water meter, and despite having 3 bathrooms(2 showers and 2 baths), a dishwasher and a washing machine which is humming away most days, our water bill is very fair at just £30 per month including sewerage costs and all added extras.
So how do we work out our budget? Well despite having a qualification in Excel, I actually use a pen and paper. There is something reassuring at writing everything down that I just don’t get from spreadsheets, cells and formulae. Oh and you know the best bit about budgeting? I get to sneak away a little something for myself as I am the one working everything out, but shhh, don’t tell the hubby!
