With Christmas fast approaching I have been struggling with what to buy my two eldest children. They are very lucky to test out a lot of toys throughout the year, so their wish lists are pretty small and toys don’t seem to have the same appeal on Christmas morning any more. That’s when I come up with the idea of getting them something useful, they are both going to be getting their very own laptops.
I know this sounds extravagant, but I truly think that they are an investment. In today’s education they have to use the computers, they have to access search engines and be able to research things fully. Gone are the days of encyclopaedias, instead Google is even what the teachers recommend in the homework books. The way the modern world is going we are writing less and less, and if I can give my children an extra helping hand at home with their IT skills, then I can only see the positivity in doing just that.
Of course being a responsible parent myself, I am well aware of the need for safe browsing and filters. However I like to have an open relationship with the children, and welcome discussion when it comes to talking about the dangers of the internet, along with the positives too. We have Virgin Media Broadband in the house, so everything is connected up to the wifi, our mobile phones, iPads, TV and the children’s laptops will be connected with wireless too. They have been brought up in the digital age, where mobile phones are more common than landlines, and where we can access the world at a click of a button. I honestly cannot see how the children will be able to go through High School without access to the internet. Lets embrace technology!
