Face it–your kids are growing faster than you can even keep track of, and that fact creates a dilemma for you as a mum: how do you make sure that all the clothing and toys from years past don’t take over your home? The key to keeping a home as orderly as your family continues to grow is to go step by step. If you start with a massive clear out, and then purge old items as needed, you can keep the house neat and organised for as long as you have a full nest. Still not convinced? Here are even more reasons to do an annual clear out of kid stuff.

It’s better than putting the kids to work. Children can be expensive, so it’s no wonder you’re always looking for ways to make a little extra money. Short of putting the little tykes to work, you can get cash for your old clothes and theirs, too. You can have a garage sale or post high-quality items online for sale to the highest bidder.

You can make space for more. The ultimate goal of any clear out is to free your home of clutter and excess. By sifting through toys and clothing in your kids’ wardrobes and common areas, you can make room for new items or just enjoy having extra space in every nook and corner. Your home might even seem bigger once you get rid of all the items your kids have outgrown.

Clearing out gives you an incentive to organise. How many times have you wished that everything had a spot in your home? Clearing out kid stuff makes that task easier by providing you with the room to assign spots to certain items like electronics (not to mention, they’re annoyingly tangled cords), books and miscellaneous objects. It also gives you less stuff to try to organise, which will also cut down on the amount of sprucing up you’ll have to do on a regular basis.

It will help you keep track of their stuff. If you’re a parent, you know the woes of tripping over Power Ranger action figures haphazardly left on the stairs or finding various pieces of a tiny tea cup set in your briefcase. But no more! Clearing out toys and games from children on the cusp of a new age group can ensure that you’re not inadvertently holding on to these kinds of playtime items longer than your little ones are.

It’s an excuse for a party. Cleaning is rarely a fun task, but if you mix it with a little social time, it can be. Don’t just tackle the job of clearing out your entire house alone–get your family involved. And if that’s not enough help, it may be time to break out the snacks and music just before you call for reinforcement–your best mum friends. This is not only the quickest way to get on with your clear out, but it’s also the most enjoyable.
