Lots of people ask me how I managed to find a job that fits in so well with children, and the answer is that I never went out with the intention of doing so. I started working in an office when I had just my eldest two children who were both in school at the time. I wanted a job that fitted in with the school hours but knew that school holidays were just one of those things that I would have to work around. I organised for the children to attend a holiday club. Although I still took my holiday allowance and enjoyed some fabulous days out with the kids in the holidays, they were made even more special as most of the days I would go to work and they would go and join in the fun with their friends in holiday club, but on the special days we would all go and have some fun. I think it made us appreciate the time we did spend together so much more.

Of course there is always the financial benefit too, working meant that I could afford to pay the bills and have a little left over for treats on days out. Although me working in secretary jobs is far fromĀ glamorousĀ it did bring the pennies in, and there is a lot worse that I could be doing in my opinion.

I also think it shows the kids a good work ethic. They know that life isn’t free, even at 10 and 8 years old they are well aware that I have to pay for the electric and gas that we use, even right down to the water. They are under no illusion that the magic hole in the wall just gives us cash, and I hope that helps them learn that they will need to work hard in life to be able to get nice things.
