It is coming up to two years ago since my husband knocked at the door saying he didn’t feel well. My first thoughts were ‘Oh no, please not a sickness bug’, but being the manly man he is, who doesn’t like to complain he just came in and sat down. ‘What’s wrong? Is it your head, your belly, your throat?’ I asked him. He stretched his arm out and said his arm was hurting, his left arm at that. He then said his chest was hurting. Alarm bells went off in my head, but my body remained calm. ‘Ok, I am going to call a doctor’ I told him, knowing he hadn’t visited a doctor since he was a child as he always refuses. ‘Ok’ he replied…that’s when I knew it was serious, so I called 999. I sent the kiddies upstairs to watch a DVD in my ‘fun mummy voice’, told him to sit on the floor if possible as I didn’t want him falling far.
See I had done first aid training and emergency aid training and everything kicked in without me even knowing, I knew he was potentially having a heart attack. I was calm and felt in control. I reassured him while an ambulance came whizzing to our house. When the paramedics came in and asked him ‘How are you feeling?’ and he replied with a strained ‘Fine’, I hoped they wouldn’t just turn round and walk out. Just an hour later my husband at 36 years old was in theatre having a stent fitted in his heart due to a blocked artery, he had suffered a heart attack in our living room as I suspected. But what made me happy was knowing that I had done the right thing, I knew what to do in an emergency, and there is no monetary value on that.
So when I saw this video, it sent chills down my spine. It is a moving video, but one that screams so much. Would you know what to do in an emergency?
