With a 9 year old and a 7 year old, the price of going back to school seems to be getting steeper each year. I don’t remember it costing this much last year, but maybe that’s because my son is bigger and the price of clothes go up as they get bigger? Or maybe it’s because we are on a stricter budget, either way it has made a dent in the bank balance.

Both my kids are starting a brand new school, so none of last years uniform can be reused, it is a completely different colour. From green to red, I have had to buy sweatshirts and cardigans. Then there is shirts, trousers, skirts, tights, socks, PE kits, swim kits and even the Children’s ballet clothes. Then there is school shoes on top of that, something that I am hoping will last them longer than a month considering how much they cost.

But then I look at how much time they are at school, compared to home and it makes sense to spend more money on their uniform than home clothes as they will be in it for a good 7 hours a day. Of course they need to be comfortable too, itchy scratchy clothes will irrate and they need to sit and concentrate. They also get put to the test in the playground, especially with J who is guaranteed to drag his knees along the floor at some point on the first day.

So although it may be denting the bank balance, I will be smiling with pride as they trot off to school wearing their brand new white crisp shirts, smart ironed trousers and shiny shoes. I will then try and avoid looking at the paint stains when they get home that night!
