Now that the holidays have arrived, there is an undercurrent of MOANING that can be heard by mums across the UK. Now I’m not sure if this is weather related, which in some ways would be justified as the weather has been pretty depressing for the last few weeks. Rain, greyness, and lack of sun do not exactly make it easier to entertain children for the holidays. However, I do believe that it doesn’t need to be all doom and gloom.

I am originally from Canada and have lived in the UK for 10 years. In contrast to what goes on here, in North America the summer holidays are a joyous occasion. Parents are excited, kids are excited and there is a general relaxed mood as there is a break from the monotonous school routine of the year. There are summer camps everywhere and fantastic programs that enable children to create life lasting memories from their incredible summers.

I think we could all use a bit of a fun injection into our summer holidays in the UK. Yes, it is true, there are less summer camps on offer in the UK. Yes, it is true, you will have to entertain your children as opposed to them being in school. There is no reason that this can’t be enjoyable for both you and them.

My suggestion is to plan one ‘exciting’ activity a day. Whether you plan a day in the park, a day trip, a playdate or a trip into town, kids don’t need much to feel entertained. As long as you are spending quality time with them, and not counting down the minutes until they are in bed, they should be quite happy.

As well as running my own business (www.bundleojoy.co.uk), I have three kids of varying ages to entertain for six weeks. So trust me, I know it is not always easy. But make the most of it, and give your kids opportunities to have a great summer!!
